NUT Niger

Brief History of NUT

The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) traces its origins back to 1925 when it was known as the Lagos Union of Teachers (LUT). In 1926, it evolved into the Association of Headmasters of Ijebu Schools (AHIS), primarily comprising principals of voluntary and grant-aided schools. The pressing need to address common issues such as discrimination and unfavorable working conditions led to the formation of a more robust organization.

On July 8, 1931, the Nigeria Union of Teachers was officially established at CMS Grammar School in Lagos. The primary goal of the NUT, both then and now, is to protect teachers’ rights and oppose any measures detrimental to their interests.

Today, the NUT stands as a beacon of professionalism and upholds trade union objectives. The evolution of the NUT in Niger State can be linked to the creation of Niger State from the old North West region in 1976. By 1978, teachers from primary and post-primary schools in the state had united under the Union.

The NUT Niger State wing also includes the construction of a modern permanent teachers’ house (secretariat).
